2014 CMAS RESULTS - SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT
A REASON TO CELEBRATE
The results for the new online science scores were just released and the students did very well in the two tested grades (fifth and eighth). In fact, some schools did awesome! District wide, our fifth and eighth grade students scored well above the state average. However, when comparing the scores of our students who have been with us for at least a year, our fifth graders scored 26% above the state average and our eighth graders scored a staggering 44% above the state average.
Mountainside Elementary and Fountain Middle School both scored 47% above the state average. Mesa Elementary was next at 44%, while Weikel, Jordahl, Aragon elementary schools, and Carson Middle School exceeded 30% above the state average. The above percentages represent the scores for students who have been with us at least a year. This is proof that students who are with us even for just one year are performing very well in science.
Science has recently been a strength, but these results exceed the performance over the past few years when compared to the state average. We were all concerned about the new format of online assessments and increased rigor level. However, our kids were well prepared and we were well prepared for the administration of the new assessment.
Social Studies was state assessed for the first time last spring and our results indicate we have a lot of work to do. Fourth and seventh grade students were tested and scored right at the state average in fourth grade, and below the state average in seventh grade. Four elementary schools – Eagleside, Weikel, Jordahl, and Mesa – scored above the state average.
Congratulations to all of the staff and students who take on this challenge every day! We all know that what we do for our students can have a life-long impact no matter how long we have children in our District.
In case you are wondering...
Construction of the
New Preschool has Begun!
The Fountain-Fort Carson School Board approved the contract to build a preschool on Jimmy Camp Road adjacent to the Administration Building. The school will house all of the District Eight preschool programs in Fountain. A similar project was constructed several years ago on Fort Carson.
The town preschool programs are being consolidated into one facility to better meet the needs of our preschool students. This will also free up space in our elementary schools and accommodate for growth until another elementary school is needed. The new preschool will have twelve classrooms and is master planned for eight additional classrooms.
The District is growing and representatives from the District continue to work closely with the City of Fountain, Fort Carson and developers to prepare for growth. This will be very challenging over the next five to ten years because the needs will far exceed the available resources. Elementary school boundary changes may also be necessary in the near future. The preschool is scheduled to open in August 2015.
